Cairo, known as Georgia’s “Hospitality City,” is the County seat of Grady County, Georgia. Nestled among lush plantations, Cairo is located about 15 miles north of the Florida state line, 35 miles from the Capital City of Tallahassee and 90 miles from Gulf Coast beaches. Cairo boasts of its rich farming community and has a history of producing Roddenbery cane syrup. Today, the City is still referred to as the “Syrup City.” Its 10,000 residents in the city and another 15,000 in Grady County enjoy an outstanding quality of life and a climate conducive to year round outdoor activities.

Cairo is the home to a number of nationally known individuals including Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball; Willie C. Harris, outfielder for the Washington Nationals; Teresa Edwards, five-time Olympic basketball star with four gold medals and one bronze medal; Bill Stanfill, former All-Pro defensive end for the Miami Dolphins; Bobby Walden, former All-Pro punter dubbed “The Big Toe from Cairo”; Musicians Mickey Thomas of “Jefferson Starship”; and Daryle Singletary, country music recording star.

Our school system projects “A Vision of Excellence” and has an average teacher-student ratio of 20:1 across seven school in Grady County. Cairo is also proud of its Roddenbery Memorial Library which has received national recognition as one of the most outstanding small-town libraries in the nation.

Smaller towns with widespread reputations also enhance the county – Calvary, Georgia with its annual salute to the mule, known as “Mule Day”; Whigham, Georgia, home of the annual “Rattlesnake Roundup” and the annual “Pow Wow and Heritage Day” presented by the Lower Muscogee Creek Tribe draw thousands of visitors and locals to the area during these celebrations.
