“Taking Charge Of Your Life, Part I”

Deep in the heart of every man and woman is the desire to be and to do something great. We come into this world seeking the acceptance of others and spend our entire lives trying to get it.  When you really think about it, God created us this way—not for the applause and approval of men, but for a deeper meaning.

When He created us, He said, “It was good and very good.” We had literally gained the approval of God. But that wasn’t the end. You see, He gave us a purpose and a mission to accomplish: “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with see in it. They will be yours for food…” (Genesis 1:28-29). He knew that as we obeyed Him and attempted to accomplish the mission He gave us, in this obedience we would find acceptance—not from God—but from ourselves. For it’s in doing what God says that we find significance, meaning, fulfillment and accomplishment. It’s in doing what God created us to do that we become great and do great things. But here is where we discover the problem. We all want to be something great, do great things, be in a place of authority, rule over others, have it our way and be all we can be, but until we learn to take charge of our own lives, we will never be able to take charge of anything else. We cannot become who God intended us to be until we first take charge of our own lives. We can never “win” on the outside until we first “win” on the inside, and the sad thing is that many people spend their lives flip-flopping from one thing to another, never happy, never satisfied, always searching, going from here to there saying, “One day I’m going to do this...one day I’m going to do that”… but it’s always tomorrow, always “out there somewhere.” But the problem is not “out there somewhere” - it’s “in here” on the inside! And, until we find this out and choose to do something about it, we will die still searching, wanting to do and be something great. Just ask the Prodigal Son— he had it made at Daddy’s house, but still didn’t have peace on the inside. If you can’t find it where you are, you won’t find it where you’re going either.

I want to encourage you to “take charge of your life.” If you will stick with me for the next few weeks, I’ll show you from God’s Word how to do it, step by step.
